TESOL versus TEFL
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a generic
label used for the teaching of the English language to second language
learners in English speaking countries.
TEFL (Teaching English as a
Foreign Language) is another term to describe the teaching of the
English language. However, it usually refers to the situation of
teaching in an environment where English is not commonly used (i.e. it
is a foreign language).
Today both TEFL and TESOL are seen as
interchangeable terms by some people. Both TEFL and TESOL tend to be
used in countries where English is learned and spoken as a second
language. They are used in public schools as well as private schools all
over the world to describe English teachers, English teaching
qualifications and English teaching job vacancies.
Positions overseas
are available for native English teachers, depending on qualifications
and experience. These English teaching positions are in a variety of
institutions, including public schools, private schools and
universities. For teachers who specialize in teaching English to
children and who want to work overseas, TESOL jobs are also available.
